Phenibut was first synthesized and used as a treatment for anxiety and insomnia in the Soviet Union during the 1960's and is still in use today in Russia and a handful of other countries in Eastern Europe. It is prescribed in the doses of 500mg or 1000mg. These are considered a low to medium dose respectively.

Phenibut is an analogue of the naturally occurring neurotransmitter GABA and acts as a GABA_B receptor agonist. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, slowing neuronal transmission and producing a calming effect. Phenibut increases the strength and duration of these effects, decreasing anxiety, improving sociability and assisting with sleep.

Some research has found that at low doses it provides slight stimulatory and motivational effects on top of its calming effects due to increasing the levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Phenibut also acts on certain voltage-gated calcium channels, in the same way as Pregabalin or Gabapentin. In some ways the effects are similar.
